Emergency Planning Committee to meet Monday

The Barton County Local Emergency Planning Committee will meet at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at the Barton County Courthouse. Two dead after murder-suicide

HOISINGTON – The investigation continues into the apparent murder/suicide Tuesday night that left two rural Barton County residents dead at a farm residence about seven miles northeast of Hoisington, the Barton County Sheriff's Office reported Wednesday.

Barton administration supports Fort Riley

The future of Fort Riley will be the subject of a town hall meeting Feb. 9 in Junction City. Barton Community College representatives plan to attend and be heard as officials from the Department of the Army listen to community members' input on how possible personnel reductions on the base could affect them.

DROUGHT IMPACT LINGERING

Last May, Governor Sam Brownback issued an executive order declaring a drought emergency in most of Kansas. That order, which includes Barton County remains in effect, said Barton County Emergency Management Director Amy Miller.

Unsafe properties focus of Hoisington City Council

The Hoisington City Council met Monday night and finally approved a resolution to approve the option to purchase real-estate between the city and Housing Opportunities Inc. for $21,500. The approval had been held up because of legal concerns over wording of the agreement which have since been worked out between the parties. This paves the way for additional duplex units to be constructed in Hoisington. The council also approved an option and sale contract to purchase property located at 309 E. Fifth for use by the city. A lien that had previously held up this agreement has been resolved.

Whooping cough vaccines available

In response to the whooping cough outbreak that has cause on death in Barton County, the Kansas Department of Health and Environment has provided the Barton County Health Department additional pertussis vaccine supplies to prevent the disease.

Barton County jobless rate holds steady

TOPEKA – Showing a continued strong jobs market, Kansas' December seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 4.2 percent, unchanged from the November revised unemployment rate and down from 4.9 percent in December 2013, the Kansas Department of Labor reported.

Gas prices creep back up a tick

Average retail gasoline prices in Kansas have risen 3.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $1.82 Sunday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 1,329 gas outlets in Kansas. This compares with the national average that has fallen 2.3 cents in the last week to $2.02.

HOMETOWN TEAMS

ELLINWOOD - Twenty-one crates from the Smithsonian Institution arrived at the Ellinwood School/Community Library on Monday. Inside those crates was an American story: the story of athletes, coaches and the fans who cheer them on. The traveling exhibit, "Hometown Teams: How Sports Shaped America," will open officially at 10 a.m. Saturday at the library, located at 210 N. Schiller Ave., but those who attend the Chamber of Commerce Coffee at 10 a.m. on Friday can get a sneak peek at the artifacts and over 200 photographs from the Smithsonian's collection highlighting Americans and their love for sports.
